I spent yesterday in front of the computer doing some research and I believe I have settled on at least one potential source of income online: article submission. I noticed that there are a number of sites that allow you to submit articles that have some form of revenue sharing agreement with you. In other words, the company places ads on the page with your article and if your articles are good enough or pertinent then traffic gets driven to your page. Then if Ike or Ingrid, the internet browser, clicks on one of the aforementioned ads you make a very small amount of money.
I read one post from an individual who claimed to be a freelance writer and submits articles to eHow.com. He said he has about 140 quality articles (I don’t know how many subpar articles he has submitted) on eHow and estimates that in order to get $2000 in passive income he would need to have about 400 articles in circulation.
I am pretty decent at math so let’s do a litte calculation. If we use 30 days as representative of an average month then he is assuming that his 400 articles (as a whole) would net him about $67 per day. If you divide the $67 by 400, you can determne how much he is attributing to each article. In this instance it would be about 28 cents per day.
I don’t kow enough right now to determine if that sounds reasonable but I am guessing if they are quality articles on popular topics then this might be possible.
Now 400 articles is a lot to write but I enjoy writing so this is a possibility in the next 2 – 4 years. The question becomes what do I write about. So let’s do a litte brainstorming right here, right now.
What do I know that other people may wish to know? I work for the Chicago Board Options Exchange in the regulatory division. So I know quite a bit about the options market (both stock and index). I could definitely write a few articles informing readers about the interworkings of the options market. I am also a former stock broker so I know a decent amount about the stock market and the financial markets in general. I could also write a book on my hatred for cold calling in my days as a broker.
I am a former pastor as well. I pastored a church for 5 1/2 years. I hold a Masters in Theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary. How many bloggers can say that? So I could write on various topics associated with the Bible or Christianity in general.
I am a passionate sports fan, particularly a Washington Redskins fan and a Chicago White Sox fan. I grew up in the DC area and will have my backside planted firmly on my couch tomorrow night to watch them play the Steelers. I could write a variety of articles in the sports arena but I am not sure of the market for them. My oldest son is a good baseball player and over the years I have learned how to analyze the mechanics of a baseball swing. I could possibly write a few articles about the mechanics of the swing. By the way, today is my son’s 18th birthday. Happy Birthday!!
My son that plays baseball will continue to play at the collegiate level. We have in the process of searching for an athletic scholarship. He has a few offers on the table now and all of it should be finalized by early March. As a result of the process we have gone through, I could write an article on the steps to landing a baseball scholarship. In fact that is the first article that I have written. You can find it here.
My wife and I have four children so I could probably write about the joys and travails of raising four children. My wife will tell you that I am quite opinionated. I could easily rant about my political opinions, etc. I am quite sure there would be a number of articles there. So as you can see there is an extensive list if you just start thinking about it. Four hundred articles is a long ways away so I better get busy. In the words of my mother-in-law: Later!
